Studio Spotlight: Jabz Boxing Drexel Hill

Jabz Boxing Drexel Hill opened in late September, but already in the first six weeks since the team hosted the studio’s grand opening, Jabz has been warmly welcomed to Drexel Hill, and a strong sense of community is building within the studio’s custom ring. Before finding Jabz Boxing, new owner Shannon Crowley found herself frustrated by her experience at other gyms. She felt that many concepts lacked an effective workout plan, an approachable vibe, or a meaningful sense of community. After her first Jabz class, Shannon was hooked. She knew she had found what she’d been looking for, and she soon committed to bringing a Jabz Boxing studio to Drexel Hill, PA.

Fast-forward to September of this year when Shannon opened the doors to her studio. “I went from feeling terrified that no one would attend our grand opening to shocked at how many people were there to celebrate with us,” recalled Shannon. “It’s been fulfilling to be so meaningfully welcomed by everyone in the area, and our member base has shown steady growth. Already, we’ve seen clients who didn’t know each other prior to our opening begin to develop support systems for one another and hold each other accountable.”

“I especially love seeing our founding members welcome new clients with open arms,” added Christina Cunningham, Studio Manager at Jabz Boxing Drexel Hill. “That can really do a lot for first-timers who might not be familiar with boxing-based workouts or are nervous about trying out a new studio. The sense of accountability and family here is already greater than I could have imagined, and it keeps me motivated every day.”

“The positive feedback we’ve gotten from our clients says so much about the atmosphere and support our coaches provide and the type of people the Jabz Boxing brand naturally draws in,” said Shannon. “We had a community member who was diagnosed with breast cancer, and our clients immediately joined in organizing a benefit raffle to support the family. The raffle raised over $700, and the studio will match this total. It feels great to have brought something so genuine and supportive to Drexel Hill.”

Shannon appreciates the structure that franchising with Jabz Boxing added to launching her business. By franchising, she had access to the resources and training she needed to ensure every element of opening her studio was accounted for, which helped keep the process more manageable. “It was a lot of work to get through the opening process but working with Jabz’s structure and systems made it doable. The studio design was already set, so I didn’t have to worry about the layout or selecting what color paint I wanted. Having the universally programmed workouts is also huge. All the coaches can really dedicate their energy to providing a great client experience rather than writing new workouts each day and worrying about the cohesion of the program over days, weeks, and months. But what’s probably been the most helpful part of stepping into a franchise system is having the marketing resources and tools in place. Marketing is how we get clients in the door, so to have the structure of client emails in place, promotional calendars planned out, and to have the graphics and content we need, again, just helps us to trust the process that’s in place and put our efforts on making the in-studio experience great. And it’s working!”

Shannon faced her fair share of hiccups in working to open the Drexel Hill studio, including shipping delays on some of the equipment. But she found the Jabz Boxing team supported her through the process, even when the unexpected hit. “When we had an item arrive damaged, the Jabz team stayed on top of the vendor to ensure they replaced it for us. There are manuals and checklists in place, but I have a good relationship with the team backing those systems, and it feels collaborative.”

From Christina’s perspective, the resources made available through franchising with Jabz Boxing made stepping into her new role seamless. “I had a lot of prior fitness experience, but the business side of running a studio was new to me, and the resources the Jabz team provided were extremely helpful,” shared Christina. “I had guidance on what I should be doing and on what timeline throughout the entire pre-opening process, but I was also able to have a hand in developing our studio into what we wanted. The balance worked really well.”

One example of that balance was the opportunity to host beginner boxing form and technique classes. “These classes went over really well since we have a lot of clients who are either returning to working out after some time off around the pandemic or are new to boxing-based workouts, specifically,” explained Shannon. “Boxing-inspired moves don’t always feel approachable for everyone and implementing the beginners’ class has really been a success in helping clients build the skills they need to stay safe and feel comfortable in class with us. We appreciated Jabz’s corporate team working with us to incorporate this into our schedule on an ongoing basis.”
